The Giraglia was founded in a Parisian café in 1952 by three men, including René Levainville, Franco Gavagnin and Beppe Croce. Their intentions focused on a prestigious Italian-French challenge that would take over the top spot of the world's fastest sailing yacht.
On July 11, 1953, 22 boats start the first race. In 1974, there were 132 participants, the very first participation record. It was in 1997 that the name of the Festival changed to Giraglia Rolex Cup. In 1998, the Yacht Club de Saint-Tropez combined with the event to introduce a new formula by preparing 3 coastal regattas on the island.
In the years 2002, the Nautical Society of Saint-Tropez continues to perpetuate the tradition and takes in hand the organization of the tests. 2002 was a visionary year, as 162 boats participated in the competitions that give free rein to the IMOCA 50 and 60 foot monohull class, a real challenge launched between the prestigious yachts that have built the Festival's fame and the Maxis de 30 m.
Administered by the Yacht Club Italiano, the Yacht Club de France and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the Giraglia is today one of the biggest cruises off the Mediterranean Sea gathering more than 200 boats, 10 different nationalities . This is the great rendez-vous of various prestigious sailing ships more and more international and ultra-competitive boats.
